Lady Broncs Defeat Miners in 5-2 Victory

March 15, 2008

The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis program did it once again. The Lady Broncs gained another win for the books against the UTEP Miners in a 5-2 victory today (Mar. 15) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

The Miners began competition with a disadvantage with only five players at hand automatically forfeiting the last match.

In the No. 1 spot, Giana Oliveira lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) to Marina Deluca, which would be the only other loss in singles action. Stephanie Willerding was to have the other loss in the No. 3 spot against Vicky Michaud with a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Julie Cirne-Lima continued her winning streak in singles action with the victory over Ximena Fuentes with a score of 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.

Megan Bedeau, Luisa Cantu and Silke Buksik would have the last three wins in singles action as Bedeau defeated Amber Brightly in a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) match, Cantu defeating Harmonie Chatagner in a 6-3, 6-2 match and Buksik having the automatic win against the Miners with no player available for competition.

In doubles action, the Lady Broncs gained the point by winning all three matches.

Teammates Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima defeated Weronika Bloczynska and Harmonie Chatagner with a score of 9-7.

Silke Buksik and Megan Bedeau continued the trend with an 8-6 victory over Marina Deluca and Ximena Fuentes.

In the last spot in doubles, Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu defeated Amber Brightly and Vicky Michaud with a score of 8-5.

The win against the Miners brings the Lady Broncs to an 11-6 overall record, the most in UTPA women's tennis history since 1993.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action tomorrow morning (Mar. 16) against Southland Conference-foe University of Texas at San Antonio at the Orville Cox Tennis Center with match time slated for 11:00.
