Women's Track and Field Team In Contention At Southland Conference Indoor Championships

The Texas State women's track and field team won two individual championships and ended the first day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in second place at the Bill Yeoman Field House in Houston. The Bobcats scored 43.5 points through the first six events of the meet and are trailing Stephen F. Austin by six and one-half points. Sam Houston State is in third place with 32 points and Southeastern Louisiana scored 25 points to end the day in fourth place. Texas State began the day scoring 23 points in the women's pentathlon as Katy Evans won the event with 3,577 points. Danete Wright finished in third place with 3,318 points as she edged Veronica Rodriguez by seven points. Rachel finished in seventh place with 3,191 points. Valerie Hancock won the women's high jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5'10" while Evans came back to finish in eighth place after she cleared 5'4.25". Texas State gained two points in the distance medley relay when Brittney Rosen, Cara Forest, Shanitra Garrett and Samantha Evola finished the race in 12:46.15. Texas State scored four additional points in the women's 5,000-meter race when Tenley Determan finished in sixth place with a time of 18:18.43 and Whitney Perkins completed the course in 18:29.91 for an eighth-place showing. The Bobcats look to gain additional points in the 60 and 200-meter dash as Irish Darrington qualified for the finals in both races. Darrington had the fastest time in the fourth heat of the 200-meters with 24.97 seconds after she posted a time of 7.76 seconds in the 60-meter semi-final race. Courtney Baker also advanced to the 800-meter final with the eighth-fastest time of 57.98 seconds. Rozen also qualified for the finals of the mile run when she completed the race in 5:16.58.
The Bobcats began the field events with Jiovanna Martinez scoring one point in the women's weight throw with a toss of 50' 2.75" in the fifth round as she passed Kendall Bass of Sam Houston State. In the men's division, Texas State is tied with Sam Houston State for eighth place in the team standing with 12 points through the first six events. Stephen F. Austin leads the men's team with 40 points, while UTSA stands in second place with 37 points, and Southeastern Louisiana is in third with 35. McNeese State score 31 points, while Lamar has 16 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has 14. Jarrod Buddin, Eric Williams, and Casey Cummings combined for nine of Texas State's nine points in the pole vault. Buddin cleared 16' 2.75" to finish in fifth place, while Williams (15'9") finished in sixth place and Cummings was eighth after he cleared 15' 3". Daniel Schmidt scored two additional points in the weight throw with a mark of 52' 9.50 inches. The Bobcats gained one point in the distance medley relay as Eric Sheppard, Dino Buchanan, Michael Webley and Matt Novak teamed for a time of 10:38.91. The Southland Conference Indoor meet concludes on Saturday, February 23 with the men's heptathlon at 9:00 a.m., the remaining field events at 11 a.m. and the running events at 1:00 p.m. |
