Baseball Falls at Texas, 5-3
Lance Loftin went 2-for-4 to lead the Texas State Bobcats against the No. 12 Texas Longhorns, but the team combined for just four more hits that could not overcome the hot-hitting foe and the `Cats dropped a 5-3 decision at The Dell Diamond Tuesday night. Texas State drops to 17-11 with the loss and Texas improves to 22-10 after the tilt. UT head coach Augie Garrido notched his 500th career win with the victory. An aggressive Longhorn defense held the Bobcats hitless throughout six innings of play, but Adam Witek crushed the notion of a no hitter in the seventh frame. Witek belted a 3-2 two-out pitch past Travis Tucker to reach base, but was left stranded on the diamond after Laurn Randell flew out to retire the inning. Down 5-0, the Cats came through in the next frame when Elliott Babcock put a double down the right field line. Thomas Field followed the effort and placed the ball in the same place for an RBI double, giving Texas State its first mark on the board. Field shifted to third base on a groundout from Witek, but a punch through the left side from Randell sent the base runner home to trim the trailing gap, 5-2. Texas State had just one chance left for a rally in the ninth inning and with one out, Loftin initiated the push with a long two-base hit to right centerfield. Brandon Belt hurled two wild pitches from the mound and Loftin advanced around the diamond for the Bobcats final tally. Zach Boles took the loss for Texas State after spending four innings on the mound. The right-hander allowed four runs, but snagged three strikeouts against the Longhorns.
Chance Ruffin was credited with the win after throwing three hitless innings to open the contest. Belt was credited with the save. The Bobcats will make a quick turnaround and host the Houston Cougars tomorrow night at Bobcat Field. UH is coming off a Tuesday night 13-6 loss with Texas A&M. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. |
