Texas State Football Team Begins Spring Practice on Monday, March 17

San Marcos, Texas- - With nine offensive and six defensive starters returning from the 2007 season, the Texas State University football team opens its 2008 spring football drills under second-year head coach Brad Wright at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17. Monday's practice will be the first of 15 workouts for the Bobcats this spring. Texas State will hold four practices during the first three weeks with Spring drills ending on April 12 with the annual Maroon and Gold Spring Game. The Bobcats will practice four straight days during the first week. In the second and third weeks, Texas State will practice on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday before holding scrimmages on Friday, March 28 and April 4. The team will scale back to two practices on the fourth and final week before playing its spring game. The offensive starters include All-Southland Conference First-Team wide receiver Cameron Luke and SLC Offensive Freshman of the Year Karrington Bush. Luke set school records when he caught 60 passes for 1,035 yards and 12 touchdowns. Bush ran for 1,039 yards and three touchdowns on 137 carries. Also returning is quarterback Bradley George, who threw for over 2,000 yards in 2007, fullback Blake Burton, wide receiver Morris Crosby, tight end Galen Dunk, along with offensive linemen Alex Luna, Jeff Bowen and Calvin Gore. Another returning starter is Stan Zwinggi, who was the starting running back before going down with an injury.
Defensively, the Bobcats return tackle Ray Parker on the defensive line, linebackers Freddy Paige, Marcus Clark and Brian Williams, along with defensive back Will Thompson and strong safety Mike Rutledge. Wright has added a new co-defensive coordinator to his staff in Fred Beihl, who will also coach the safeties after serving as linebackers coach at Tulane in 2007. |
