SAN MARCOS - The 2007-08 Bobcat women's basketball senior class capped their home season in impressive fashion, leading Texas State (17-8, 11-1 SLC) to a 78-62 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-16, 5-6 SLC) Thursday night. Senior Joyce Ekworomadu tied her season high with 27 points while senior Brooke DeGrate swiped a career-high nine steals, two shy of the Bobcat record. Fellow senior Marie Moser also chipped in, leading the Bobcat post players with seven points while adding four rebounds. "I'm glad we were able to give our seniors a win in their last game in Strahan Coliseum," said head coach Suzanne Fox. "All three of them are very special and a huge reason for our success this season." The Islanders came out looking to spoil the evening, scoring the game's first four points and holding a 6-4 lead 4:30 into the game. Ashley Cole gave the Bobcats their first lead, scoring six points as part of a 13-2 run that put the `Cats on top 17-8 with 11:18 before half time. The lead would not hold, as Deziree Green hit a three to tie the game at 24-24 before Sarah Davidson capped a 7-0 Islanders run that put the visitors up 26-24 with 6:32 on the clock. Chika Ofoegbu and Cole answered to swing the lead back to the Bobcats, and the teams would trade baskets over the final four minutes as Texas State headed to the locker room up 39-38 at the half. Despite not scoring over the first three minutes of the second half, the Bobcats grew their lead behind seven straight points from Victoria Davis, the last of which put Texas State up 53-46 with 12:27 left in the game.
After the Islanders trimmed the lead back to two with 9:04 remaining, the Bobcats turned up the heat with a 16-0 run that lasted nearly five minutes and ended with Texas State up 72-54 with 4:24 to play. Ekworomadu scored 10 points over the span while DeGrate had three of her nine steals. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi continued to struggle, making only three field goals over the game's final 9:49 as the Bobcats closed out the 78-62 win. Ekworomadu tied her season high that she originally set against Kansas State and finished two shy of her career high for points while adding four steals and five rebounds in the game. Cole added 12 points for Texas State while Aimee Hilburn grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. DeGrate's nine steals were also three more than her previous high. Sarah Davidson led the Islanders with 13 points while Elisa Beagle added 10 points. Adrienne Scott led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in rebounds with eight while also netting eight points. The Roadrunners won the first meeting between the two teams this season and sit just a half game behind the Bobcats. |
