Softball Splits Doubleheader with Nicholls State
March 21, 2008
SAN MARCOS - Jetta Weinheimer's three-run homer with two outs in the third inning broke a scoreless tie as Texas State (19-11, 12-2 SLC) defeated Nicholls State 7-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday, avenging a 3-0 loss to the Lady Colonels in the first half of the twin bill. Kelsey Cammarata extended the lead with a solo blast to left field in the bottom of the fourth. A Nicholls State error followed the solo shot, placing runners on the corners for Ryan Kos to add another run with a groundout. Nicholls State got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Bobcats got two more runs off Lady Colonel reliever Krystalin Ensminger thanks to some mental mistakes. Ensminger first made a throwing error on an attempt to throw out Jetta Weinheimer at second, resulting in Texas State placing runners at second and third with nobody out. Another walk loaded the bases before Ensminger committed a pair of illegal pitches, resulting in two runs. Katie Garnett (9-3) got the win with 5.2 innings of one-run softball, striking out two batters. Barksdale (2-5) took the loss for Nicholls State after allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. The game two win made up for the first game of the doubleheader, which Nicholls State won 3-0. With runners on the corners, Nicholls State tried a double steal. Texas State was ready for the play as Ryan Kos cut off the throw to second, but her throw home could not get Kat Harrell. The Bobcats got a runner in scoring position in both the first and third inning but could not push the tying run across. Nicholls State then added to their lead in the fifth when Kodi Butler connected for a two-run homer that made it t3-0.
Jetta Weinheimer singled in the bottom of the seventh with one out trying to start a rally before Taylor Hall followed with a walk. Kristina Tello came up to bat as the tying run, but she grounded out before Kos popped out to second to end the game. Audrey Wood (4-1) struck out two and allowed four hits in pitching her second shutout of the season. Ragan Blake (8-8) took the loss for Texas State, allowing three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out six. The Bobcats and Lady Colonels conclude their series Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. |
