Final Stats

SAN MARCOS - Jetta Weinheimer finished 3-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base while Jenna Emery added a pair of doubles and two RBIs as Texas State defeated New Mexico 5-0 Saturday for the Bobcats' fifth straight win.

A bases-loaded single by Weinheimer in the bottom of the fifth plated two and broke a scoreless tie. Weinheimer then took second before Emery sent a pitch to deep centerfield for two more runs and a 4-0 Bobcat lead.

Texas State (23-11) added the fifth run of the game an inning later thanks to a pair of New Mexico errors that allowed Alex Newton to come home. The Lobos (15-12) tallied five errors in the game as all five Bobcat runs went unearned.

New Mexico had early opportunities to take the lead, as a walk and a single helped put runners at second and third with one out in the top of the third. Lindsey Elcess hit a sharp grounder down the first base line, but Leah Boatright snagged the shot and threw home to catch Erin Brandow in a rundown between third and home. Bobcat starter Katie Garnett then got Gabriella Parra, New Mexico's best hitter, to ground out to shortstop to end the threat.

Garnett ran into more trouble in the fourth when a dropped third strike put Kimberly Holyfield at first to lead off the inning. Katie Gilmore followed with a single before a fielder's choice placed runners on the corners with one out. Madelyn Machac hit a soft grounder just in front of home plate, but Garnett alertly threw home to Weinheimer, who held on to tag out Holyfield. Brandow stepped in looking to keep the Lobo inning alive but grounded out to Emery for the third out.

The Lobos managed to put runners in scoring position in each of the final five innings, but New Mexico stranded 11 runners while the Bobcats left 10 on base.

Emery finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Newton went 1-for-3 with two runs. McKenzie Baack also extended her hitting streak with a single, reaching base in all four trips to the plate with a 1-for-2 night that included reaching safely on an error and a pair of walks.

Garnett pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out three. Elizabeth Dennis came on in relief to add a scoreless inning of work, allowing two hits.

Machac took the hard-luck loss for the Lobos, pitching a full six innings but allowing five runs, all unearned, on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Texas State and New Mexico conclude their series on Sunday at noon.
