Softball Swept in Twin Bill at Texas Tech
April 9, 2008 LUBBOCK - McKenzie Baack homered in each game, but early deficits proved too much to overcome as Texas State was swept by Texas Tech in a doubleheader on Tuesday by scores of 6-2 and 8-6. The Red Raiders (13-27) opened with two runs in each of the first two innings of game one, building a 6-0 lead through four innings over Texas State (26-13). A pair of RBI singles plated the first two runs before Jennifer Bowers doubled the lead with a two-run homer. Montana capped the Tech scoring in the fourth with her second RBI single of the game that made it 6-0. Baack led off the seventh inning with a lead off home run before Leah Boatright and Jetta Weinheimer reached with back-to-back doubles to trim the lead to 6-2. With nobody out, Texas Tech starter Ashly Jacobs came back into the game after pitching five scoreless innings to start the game and retired the next three Bobcat batters in order for the win. Katie Garnett (11-4) took the loss for Texas State, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in six innings. Jacobs tallied six strikeouts and no runs in six innings of work for the Red Raiders while Sarah Losleben allowed two runs in an inning of work. Game two started off rocky for the `Cats as well, with Texas Tech striking for four runs in the first inning off Elizabeth Dennis. The first four batters all singled before Jennifer Corkin and Tye Coats each doubled in a run. Weinheimer uncorked a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to pull Texas State within 4-2, but Texas Tech answered with three runs when five of the first six batters of the inning reached via a base hit to extend the lead to 7-2. Dennis helped her own cause with a one-out single in the fifth, advancing to second when Kristina Tello reached on an error. With two outs, After a fielder's choice, Baack again went yard with a three-run blast over the right field fence.
The rally continued in the sixth with another home run, this time off Weinheimer's bat to lead off the inning and make it 7-6. With Jacobs trying to preserve Texas Tech's lead, Jenna Emery followed with a one-out single. Lacey Duncan reached on a fielder's choice that also advanced Emery to second. With the tying run in scoring position, Dennis struck out before Tello lined out to leave the runners stranded. Another Texas Tech run crossed the plate in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly that made it 8-6. Texas State brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh after Baack drew a one-out walk, but Jacobs retired Boatright and Weinheimer to complete the sweep for the Red Raiders. Dennis (3-1) allowed eight runs on 12 hits, walking three and striking out three in six innings. Coats (5-11) pitched five innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on three hits while walking two. Jacobs was credited with the save for her two innings of work. The Bobcats now return home to face Northwestern State in a three game series beginning Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. |
