Anteaters improve to 7-0 in on-campus games

IRVINE, Calif. -- Seniors Patrick Sanders and Darren Fells combined for 37 points Saturday night to lead UC Irvine past UC Riverside, 67-53, in a Big West Conference game at the Bren Events Center.

 

Sanders recorded game highs of 21 points and seven rebounds as the Anteaters (8-11, 3-3) improved to 7-0 in games on campus this season.  He was 3 of 3 from three-point range and 6 of 7 from the foul line.  Fells scored 16 points, hitting 10 of 11 free throws, and added five boards and three assists.

 

Sophomore guard Michael Hunter added 10 points, scoring in double figures for the third straight game.  Senior guard Marcus McIntosh scored eight points, all in the first half, while sophomore wing Chad DeCasas added seven points.

 

The Anteaters went on a 12-1 run in the final 4 ½ minutes of the first half to turn a nine-point deficit into a 30-28 halftime lead.

 

The Highlanders tied the game at 37-37 on a basket by Christian Soto with 15:40 remaining in the game but the Anteaters reeled off seven straight points and pulled away for the win.  UCI hit 15 of 18 free throws in the second half and 23 of 26 in the game.

 

Larry Cunningham led Riverside (4-14, 1-6) with 12 points and Jalonni Diggs added 11.

 

UCI shot 43.9 percent from the field in the game and the Highlanders 41.3 percent.  Riverside is 0-11 in road games this season.

 

The Anteaters play their next four games on the road, beginning Thursday night against Cal State Northridge at 7:00 at the Matadome.
