LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Senior center Darren Fells had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season to lead UC Irvine past Long Beach State, 70-48, in a Big West Conference game at the Walter Pyramid Saturday night.

The victory in the Black and Blue Rivalry between the two schools was the Anteaters' first conference road win of the season.

Sophomore guard Michael Hunter added 16 points for UCI (9-12, 4-4), hitting 4 of 6 threes, and senior forward Patrick Sanders had 15 points and seven boards. Junior guard Brett Lauer scored eight points off the bench and senior guard Marcus McIntosh recorded a career-high five assists and two steals.

Donovan Morris led the 49ers (4-16, 1-7) with 20 points.

UCI, which led 38-21 at halftime, shot 53 percent from the field in the game and hit 8 of 16 threes. Long Beach State was 3 of 18 from three-point range and shot 35 percent from the floor in the contest.

"I thought overall, we played with a lot of energy," Anteaters' head coach Pat Douglass said. "When we have played with energy, we normally have shot the ball well.

"It helps our team's confidence to win one on the road and now we have to try and do it again next week."

UCI travels to Cal Poly Thursday night and UC Santa Barbara next Saturday evening in 7:00 games. The UCSB game will be televised live on Prime Ticket.
