SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Senior forward Patrick Sanders scored 18 points and senior guard Marcus McIntosh added a career-high 16 as UC Irvine defeated UC Santa Barbara, 65-59, in a Big West Conference game at the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara.

Sanders, UCI's leading scorer, did not play in Thursday's loss at Cal Poly with a hyperextended right knee.  He was 5 of 9 from the field Saturday night and 6 of 6 from the foul line.

McIntosh was 6 of 9 from the floor and added two assists and one steal.  Senior center Darren Fells had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds while freshman guard Patrick Rembert scored a career-high seven points.

UCSB, which was led by Justin Joyner with a career-high 16 points, led 34-30 at halftime and took a 10-point lead at 47-37 with 15:13 remaining on a three-pointer by Joyner.

UCI then went on a 13-0 run and led 50-47 when McIntosh converted a three-point play with 9:51 left.

UCSB regained the lead at 52-50 on a layup by Chris Devine with 9:03 remaining but UCI took the lead for good at 54-52 on a pair of free throws by Sanders and a layup by McIntosh with 7:17 left.

The Anteaters extended the lead to 62-54 on a jumper by Sanders with 1:57 remaining.

With the victory, UCI head coach Pat Douglass tied Bill Mulligan for most wins in Anteater coaching history with 163.  Douglass can set the UCI mark Thursday night against good friend and former Pacific teammate Bob Thomason when the Anteaters host the Tigers at 7:05.

UCI (10-13, 5-5) shot 55 percent from the field in the second half Saturday night and 47.7 percent for the game.  The Anteaters, who out-rebounded UCSB 30-27, hit 17 of 22 free throws.

The Gauchos (17-6, 6-4), who lost at home for just the third time in 12 games this season, shot 40.4 percent from the field in the game, including 27.3 percent in the second half.

"Marcus McIntosh really stepped it up tonight, Darren Fells rebounded strong and it was nice to see Pat (Sanders) come back.  His play was a real key for us with some nice passes and finishes," Douglass said.  "Our three seniors really earned this victory and I am happy for them and the team.

"Santa Barbara is an excellent team.  We kind of hung around, moved up our intensity and got some defensive stops," Douglass said.  "We kind of snuck up on them.

"This is the most significant road win for us this season against a team that is in the upper half of the league.  This is a big win for our group," Douglass added.
