UC Irvine's Rally Falls Short at UC RiversideFeb. 20, 2008 RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Riverside built a 16-point halftime lead and held off a furious UC Irvine rally Wednesday night to top the Anteaters, 85-76, at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. Larry Cunningham led the Highlanders (6-17, 3-9) with 21 points, hitting 9 of 11 free throws in the second half. Christian Soto added 13 points as UCR shot 63.6 percent from the field in the second half and 58 percent for the game. Junior guard Brett Lauer led UCI (11-14, 6-6) with a career-high 25 points, including 23 in the second half. He hit 7 of 10 three-point field goals for the game. Senior center Darren Fells recorded 19 points and eight rebounds while sophomore guard Michael Hunter scored 13 points, hitting 5 of 7 from the field, and added a career-high six steals. Senior forward Patrick Sanders scored eight points and passed 1,000 points in his career as he currently has 1,007. The Anteaters, who trailed 37-21 at halftime, shot 65.5 percent from the floor in the second half and 53.1 percent for the game. UCR led 45-27 on a basket by Soto with 16:43 left in the game before UCI gradually cut into the deficit, pulling to within 70-69 on a three by Lauer with 3:11 remaining. Cunningham missed a shot with 2:37 left but Aaron Scott converted a traditional three-point play off an offensive rebound at 2:33 to the put the Highlanders up by four at 73-69 as UCR hit 11 of 13 foul shots down the stretch. UCI plays its final five regular-season games at home beginning with a non-conference contest against Idaho Saturday night at 7:05 at the Bren Center. |
