UC Irvine Knocks Off Cal State Northridge 82-66March 1, 2008 IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior center Darren Fells had 19 points and nine rebounds while sophomore guard Michael Hunter tied his career high with 18 points to lead UC Irvine past league-leading Cal State Northridge, 82-66, before a Homecoming crowd of 3,173 at the Bren Events Center Saturday night. Fells added five assists and three steals, and senior forward Patrick Sanders scored 16 points as the Anteaters improved to 11-0 in on-campus games this season, including 10-0 at the Bren Center. UCI, which has won five of its past six games, is 14-14 overall and 8-6 in the Big West. Marcus McIntosh and Chad DeCasas added nine points apiece for the Anteaters, who shot 53.1 percent from the field in the game. Deon Tresvant led Northridge with 18 points, all in the second half, as the Matadors fell to 19-8 and 11-3 in the Big West. Josh Jenkins scored 13 points and Tremaine Townsend added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Fells scored 12 points in the opening 20 minutes as UCI led 39-29 at halftime. Two free throws by Hunter gave the Anteaters a 51-35 lead with 16:43 remaining in the game but Northridge then went on a 22-9 run to cut the deficit to 60-57 on a three-pointer by Townsend with 4:48 left. Following a timeout, Hunter converted a four-point play at 4:36, hitting a triple and free throw. Sanders then hit back-to-back baskets to put the Anteaters up 68-57 with 3:24 remaining. Jenkins hit two free throws with 3:23 remaining to pull the Matadors within nine, the closest they would come down the stretch. UCI closes out the regular season with two home games next week, facing UC Davis Thursday and Cal State Fullerton Saturday in 7:05 p.m. games at the Bren Center. |
