UC Irvine Defeats UC Davis 79-62

All five Anteater starters score in double figures

IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior forward Patrick Sanders scored 18 points to lead a balanced UC Irvine offense as the Anteaters defeated UC Davis, 79-62, Thursday night in a Big West Conference game at the Bren Events Center.

 

Chad DeCasas added 13 points, Michael Hunter 12, and Darren Fells and Marcus McIntosh 11 each as all five UCI starters scored in double figures.  The Anteaters, in winning their fourth straight game and six of the last seven, improved to 15-14 overall and 9-6 in the Big West.

 

The Anteaters, who led 34-26 at halftime, shot 60.7 percent from the field in the second half and 55.4 percent for the game.  UCI recorded a season-high 23 assists as Fells and DeCasas led the way with five apiece.  Kevin Bland led the Anteaters with seven rebounds as he added four steals and three assists.

 

Dominic Calegari led UC Davis (9-21 (2-13) with 17 points while Vince Oliver added 11.

 

UCI led by as many as 21 points in the second half, the last time coming at 67-46 on a three-pointer by Brett Lauer with 7:46 remaining.

 

The victory lifted the Anteaters' record this season at the Bren Center to 11-0.  UCI is 12-0 in all on-campus games, including a November win over Loyola Marymount at Crawford Court.

 

With UC Santa Barbara defeating Cal State Northridge Thursday night, the Anteaters will be the No. 5 seed in next week's Big West Tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center.  UCI will face the eighth seed Wednesday night at 6:00 in a first-round game.

 

The Anteaters close out the regular season Saturday night hosting Cal State Fullerton at 7:05.  Seniors Fells, McIntosh and Sanders will be recognized prior to the game.
