Kevin Bland Named to Big West Academic All-Conference Team

Anteater junior selected to team for winter sports

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine junior Kevin Bland was one of 19 Anteater student-athletes named to the 2008 Big West Academic All-Conference team for winter sports.

A total of 85 student-athletes from nine member institutions were recognized from the winter sports of men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming and diving.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes have to maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, have attained a sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.

The 6-8 Bland played in all 34 games for UCI this season, averaging 5.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. He led the Anteaters in steals with 53.

He ranked fifth in the conference in steals and 10th in rebounding for UCI, which finished 18-16 overall and advanced to the championship game of the Big West Tournament for the first time in 14 years.
