No. 6 UC Irvine Falls to No. 1 BYUFeb. 16, 2008 IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was held to a .106 hitting percentage as BYU defeated the Anteaters 28-30, 30-22, 30-24, 30-27 Saturday in an Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Bren Events Center. UCI fell to .500 on the season at 8-8 (5-6 MSPF) while the Cougars climbed to 11-0 (6-0) overall. UCI was paced by Cory Yoder and Aaron Harrell, who totaled 12 kills apiece. Freshman Kevin Wynne recorded a career-high 10 block assists as the Anteaters put up a season-high 39 stuffs. Libero Brent Asuka picked up eight digs while Anthony Spittle dished out 23 assists. BYU was led by Ivan Perez, who had a double-double with 22 kills and 10 digs while firing three service aces. Joel Silva led the team with 11 digs while setter Reed Chilton totaled 47 assists. Russell Holmes topped all players with 11 block assists while putting away 15 kills. BYU opened game one with a 10-5 lead but UCI would catch the Cougars at 18-18 on three BYU unforced errors. Tied at 20-20, Wynne and Ryan Ammerman delivered the block on Justen Leandro and Jon Steller served a winner to give UCI a 22-20 advantage. BYU closed the gap on back-to-back UCI errors and the set would see four ties before the Anteaters claimed the lead for good at 28-26 on a pair of kills from Steller. Ammerman found Harrell for the 29-27 lead and Trent Sorensen served to seal the win. Game two was evenly contested but at 15-15, BYU went on an 8-2 run to lead 22-17 as the Cougars capped the run with a triple block. UCI rallied to come to within three points on a kill from Wynne but BYU halted the Anteater attack with a 6-1 run of its own (29-21) and Chilton found Holmes for the win. It was the Cougars with the early edge in game three, going on a 6-1 spurt to build a 16-11 lead. The Anteaters managed to close the gap to three at 25-22 on consecutive UCI blocks. However, BYU responded out of a timeout with a 4-1 rally to put the team at game point (29-23) and would go on to take a 2-1 games lead on a kill from Jonathan Charette. It was all BYU early in game four, building a six-point lead (12-6) that stretched to nine at 18-11. UCI chipped at the lead, tying the game at 23-23 but Perez combined with the Cougar block proved to be too much for the Anteaters. |
