Final Stats

Irvine, Calif. - Junior Jon Steller recorded 16 kills to lead No. 7 UC Irvine to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-28) victory over No. 14 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at the Bren Events Center.

The Anteaters had a balanced attack with Cole Reinholm (9), Aaron Harrell (8), Cory Yoder (7) and Kevin Wynne (7) each contributing in the kill column. Setter Ryan Ammerman totaled 41 set assists, three service aces, eight digs and three block assists in the win. Libero Brent Asuka had a match-high 13 digs.

The Gauchos dominated the net, out-blocking UCI 16.5 to 7.5. Jeff Menzel led UCSB with 11 kills and eight blocks. Phil Mathews, Theo Brunner and Michael Fisher each put away seven kills. Mathews had a team-high nine digs, while Brunner matched Menzel with eight blocks.

After winning game one, UCI trailed 18-14 in game two before going on a 5-1 run to knot the score at 19-19. The teams remained close as Ryan Ammerman stepped back to the service line with the score tied 22-22 and scored five straight on three aces and two Gauchos attack errors to give UCI a 27-22 advantage. The Anteaters would finish the game 30-25 on a kill by Jon Steller.

UCSB led 22-18 in game three, but the Anteaters scored the next four points on the strength of Steller's serving, which included one ace, to catch the Gauchos at 22-22.  Santa Barbara made a run of their own scoring the next four to go back on top 26-22, only to watch UCI score the next four to tie it once again at 26-26.  The teams traded points until a UCSB service error was followed by a Cole Reinholm kill for the 30-28 Anteater victory.

UCI evens its record at 9-9 overall and goes to 6-7 in the MPSF, while UCSB drops to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in league play.

The Anteaters host Ohio State next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 29-Mar. 1) in non-conference matches at the Bren Center.
