UC San Diego Upends UC IrvineMarch 29, 2008
La Jolla, The Tritons, who sweep the two-match series in 2008, improve to 9-15 overall and 5-13 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while UCI drops to 12-13 on the year and 8-10 in the MPSF. It is the first time UCSD has ever swept an MPSF opponent. UCI's Aaron Harrell set a school record for match hitting percentage with a perfect 1.000, recording 13 kills in 13 attempts and no errors. UCSD's Jason Spangler led all players with 24 kills, while hitting .439. With the win, UCSD improves to 9-15, 5-13 Calvin Ross added 15 kills and six blocks while Gerald Houseman chipped in 13 kills on .650 hitting and Frank Fritsch added 10 kills. Phil Bannan recorded 45 assists, four kills and seven digs. Opposite Jon Steller led UCI with 22 kills, while Jordan DuFault added 14 kills. Libero Brent Asuka dug a match-high 16 balls. In a closely contested game one UCI led 29-27 before an Anteater service error was followed by an attack errord to knot the score at 29-29. UCI had its second game point on a Cory Yoder kill only to watch three consecutive UCI hitting errors give the Tritons the game, 33-31. UCSD jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in game two. The Anteaters rallied to tie the score at 10-10 behind the serving of Jon Steller and Kevin Wynne and went ahead 12-10 on a pair of Triton attack errors. UCI would go on to a 30-25 victory as Aaron Harrell pounded three kills to end the game. Jordan DuFault sparked the Anteaters off the bench with five kills, hitting .625 (5-0-8). UCI controlled game three hitting .323 compared to just .188 for the Tritons. UCI took a 12-6 lead and never looked back. UCSD cut the deficit down to 23-20, but a 3-1 run proved to be too much as UCI took game three 30-24. There were 10 ties in the fourth game, the final coming at 25-25. UCSD would then score the final five points of the game, 30-25 and force game five. In the fifth game, UCSD took a 5-2 lead as Jason Spangler recorded two kills in the stretch. UCI scored three straight points to tie the game at 5-5 and would come as close as 8-7 and later 12-11 before the Tritons went on a 3-0 run with the help of three straight UCI errors to close the match at 15-11.
