No. 6 UC Irvine Battles No. 10 UCLA

UC IRVINE HOSTS UCLA: No. 6 UC Irvine (10-10, 6-7) will battle No. 10 UCLA Friday (Mar. 8) at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Center in the lone match of the week. 

 

The game will be televised by Cox3 Sports. Mark Heller and Dain Blanton will call the action.

 

VS THE OPPONENTS: UCLA holds a 37-7 lead in the series record, winning the first meeting of the year 3-1 in Los Angeles. The Bruins are 10-9 overall and 7-6 in the MPSF. UCLA will host Lewis Tuesday and UC Santa Cruz Wednesday before coming to the Bren. The Bruins dropped to 10th nationally this week after falling to Ball State twice last week.

 

OLDIES BUT GOODIES: A UCI men's volleyball alumni reception held before Friday's match begining at 6:00 p.m. on the Berry Terrace.

 

IN THE RANKINGS: UC Irvine stayed at No. 6 in the AVCA Coaches poll. The Anteaters have been ranked in the nation's top 10 for 44 consecutive weeks.

 

STELLER TIES ACE MATCH RECORD: Junior Jon Steller recorded six aces in the first match with the Buckeyes, tying the top spot in the UCI match record book with Matt Webber (2004), Mike Rupp (1999) and Jarrett Jensen who recorded six aces on two occasions in 2002. The opposite fired four of his career-high six aces in game three.

 

As a team, UCI recorded 15 aces over two matches with Ohio State.

ANTEATERS GO 1-1 LAST WEEK: UCI split a pair of matches with No.10 Ohio State at home last week. UCI defeated the Buckeyes 3-0 in the first match taking game three, 30-13, the largest margin of victory by an MPSF team this year.

Ohio State outlasted the Anteaters, 3-2 in the second match with usual starters Aaron Harrell, Cory Yoder and Brent Asuka taking the match off. Freshman Jordan DuFault recorded a career-high 21 kills to lead the Anteaters. Junior Jon Steller played in two games adding 10 kills and two aces.

BALLS WON'T HIT THE FLOOR: Junior Brent Asuka leads the MPSF in dig average with a 3.22 mark. He also ranks fourth nationally with a 2.92 average. Friday's match will feature two of the best liberos in the country as UCLA's Tony Ker is second in the country in digs with a 3.42 average overall.

 

ANTEATER OFFENSE RANKS SEVENTH NATIONALLY: UC Irvine is ranked seventh nationally in hitting percentage at a .286 clip. The team is fifth among MPSF schools.

 

PRINCE MACGREGOR: Outside hitter Mac Waite, who was a prince on the 2008 Homecoming court, recorded a career-high three kills and hit .600 in the first match with Ohio State in his first collegiate appearance.
