April 22, 2008

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's golf team won their fourth consecutive team title, while senior Kim Lorenzana was the individual champion at the Big West Conference Championships at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club Tuesday.

The Anteaters shot a final round of 301 to capture the title with a score of 908 (312-295-301), seven strokes ahead of UC Davis (915). Cal State Northridge was third (938), Cal Poly was fourth (941), Long Beach State was fifth (942) and UC Riverside was sixth (947).

Senior Kim Lorenzana won her first collegiate tournament with a par on the third play-off hole with UC Davis' Chelsea Stelzmiller. Lorenzana had a team best 72 on the final round to finish with a score of 222 (77-73-72).

Senior Selaneé Henderson was third after carding a 225 (77-74-74) and sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha was fourth with a 54-hole total of 227 (77-71-79). Freshman Hillary Packard was 20th at 239 (81-77-81), while sophomore Mariko Makabe had a solid round of 76 on the final 18 to move into 24th place with a score of 245 (87-82-76).

Henderson becomes only the third player in Big West history to be named to the All-Big West first team all four years, joining San Jose State's Vibeke Stensrud (1993-96) and former Anteater Angela Won who earned the distinction from 2003-06. Lorenzana was  named to the All-Big West first team for the third consecutive year, while Chawalitmetha was named to the All-Big West second team.

Head coach Julie Brooks was named Big West Coach of the Year for the second straight season.  Brooks is in her second year at the helm of the Anteaters.

Next, UCI will travel to the NCAA West Regional at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Sacramento May 8-10.
