No. 36 Anteaters Beat No. 68 Cal Poly 5-2

'Eaters beat Mustangs 5-2 in Big West opener

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 36 UC Irvine women's tennis team (1-3, 1-0) defeated No. 68 Cal Poly 5-2 Saturday afternoon in Big West Conference play at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The `Eaters won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Seniors Inna Agababian and Jessica Broadfoot defeated Shannon Brady and Amy Markoff 8-2 in the No. 2 match. Juniors Heidi Kaloi and Ali Borowicz clinched the doubles point with a 9-8 win over Maria Malec and Diana Filip in the No. 3 match.

In singles, Inna Agababian gave UCI a 2-0 lead as she beat Steffi Wong 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Jessica Broadfoot put UCI up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Whitney Peterson in No. 4 singles. Diana Filip beat Ali Borowicz 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot to cut UCI's lead to 3-1. Junior Clare Fermin clinched the overall team win for UCI as she beat Shannon Brady 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. Brittany Blalock beat senior Becky Bernhard 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 match. Freshman Brooke Bartlett defeated Maria Malec 6-3, 7-6 in the No. 5 slot to conclude the match

The Anteaters return to action Saturday February 16th as they travel to Bakersfield where they will take on No. 12 Fresno State at 2:00 p.m. in a neutral site match.
