NO. 57 ANTEATERS HOST UC RIVERSIDE: The No. 57 UC Irvine women's tennis team (13-8, 6-1) will host UC Riverside Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in their final regular season match in Big West play at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

 

The match will be the final home match for seniors Becky Bernhard (Roseville/Oakmont HS), Inna Agababian (San Francisco/George Washington HS), Jessica Broadfoot (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Lisa Shih (La Jolla HS).

 

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Highlanders are 8-9 overall and 1-6 in Big West play. Erynne Oki is UCR's No. 1 singles player.

 

WEEK IN REVIEW: The Anteaters went 1-1 in non-conference play with a 6-1 win over New Mexico State and a 6-1 loss to No. 18 Pepperdine. Becky Bernhard went 2-0 on the week at No. 1 singles including a win over No. 77 Sylvia Kosakowski of Pepperdine.

 

ANTEATERS RANKED 57th: The Anteaters are ranked 57th in the country by the ITA rankings. UCI had it's highest preseason ranking ever as they started the year off ranked 37th.

 

The Anteaters finished the 2006-07 season ranked 35th nationally after a first round loss to Texas in the NCAA Tournament to finish with a 21-5 record. UCI was ranked as high as No. 28 in the country during the season as the team won the Big West regular season championship with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play.

 

ANTEATER LEADERS: Freshman Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) leads the team with a 13-4 record. Jessica Broadfoot is second on the team with a 13-7 record. The doubles team of junior Ali Borowicz (Santa Rosa/Montgomery HS) and Bartlett is 5-1 on the year at the No. 3 position to lead the team.

 

SENIOR Becky Bernhard IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior Becky Bernhard was ranked as high as No. 81 in the Fila/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings in 2007. Bernhard was named Big West Player of the Week last week and has won the honor a total of 11 times in her career, more than any women's tennis player in Big West history and more than any athlete at UCI in Big West sports. Bernhard has currently won nine straight singles matches.
