Brooke Bartlett and UCI open the Big West Championship with Pacific

No. 57 Anteaters at Big West Championship

UCI is the No. 2 seed; opens with Pacific in quarterfinals Friday

NO. 57 ANTEATERS AT BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP: The No. 57 UC Irvine women's tennis team (14-8, 7-1) will face Pacific at 9:00 a.m. Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Anteaters will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

 

BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: The Anteaters will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament after going 7-1 in Big West play this season. UCI has been to at least the semifinals in each of the past six seasons. If UCI defeats Pacific they will play in the semifinals Saturday at 9:00 a.m. against either Cal State Northridge or UC Davis.

 

WEEK IN REVIEW: The Anteaters went 1-0 on the week as they defeated UC Riverside 7-0 in their final regular season match. Senior Becky Bernhard (Roseville/Oakmont HS) won her 10th straight match at No. 1 singles defeating Erynne Oki.

 

ANTEATERS RANKED 57th: The Anteaters are ranked 57th in the country by the ITA rankings. UCI had it's highest preseason ranking ever as they started the year off ranked 37th.

 

ANTEATER LEADERS: Freshman Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) leads the team with a 14-4 record. Jessica Broadfoot is second on the team with a 14-7 record. The doubles team of junior Ali Borowicz (Santa Rosa/Montgomery HS) and Bartlett is 5-1 on the year at the No. 3 position to lead the team.

 

SENIOR Becky Bernhard IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior Becky Bernhard was ranked as high as No. 81 in the Fila/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings in 2007. Bernhard has been named Big West Player of the Week three straight weeks and has won the honor a total of 12 times in her career, more than any women's tennis player in Big West history and more than any athlete at UCI in Big West sports. Bernhard has currently won 10 straight singles matches.
