IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 10 UC Irvine women's water polo team defeated No. 16 UC San Diego 6-2 in the consolation bracket of the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational Saturday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead with 3:39 left in the second period. UCI tied the match at 1-1 with a goal by junior Gianna Rossi with 2:51 left in the opening half. Senior Jessica Lewis gave UCI a 2-1 lead with 1:23 left in the half. Junior Ashling Taylor put UCI up 3-1 as she scored 31 seconds into the third period. Audra Bloom cut the lead to 3-2 as she scored for UCSD with 6:54 left in the third period. The Anteaters would score three unanswered goals to end the match with a 6-2 victory.
Junior keeper Lauren Machanis had seven saves for UCI. Keeper Kim Hockett had 10 saves for the Tritons
The Anteaters will play at 9:15 a.m. Sunday in the consolation bracket and UCSD will play at 11:45 a.m. with both teams playing at Corona del Mar High School.
