NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The No. 10 UC Irvine women's water polo team (7-5) beat No. 12 Long Beach State 8-5 in the eleventh place match Sunday at the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational at Corona del Mar High School.
UC Irvine took a 3-1 lead with 26 seconds left in the second period. Long Beach State quickly answered back with a goal with two seconds remaining to cut UCI's lead to 3-2. The 49ers tied the match at 3-3 just 40 seconds into the third period. The Anteaters then went on a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 lead with 6:10 remaining in the match.
Freshman Caitlin Haskell led all scorers with three goals for the `Eaters. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis had 13 saves for UCI while keeper Kristen Straiger had nine saves for Long Beach State.
The Anteaters will return to action Friday as they go on the road to face UC Davis at 4:00 p.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center.
