Anteaters Lose 9-7 in final regular season match

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 8 UC Irvine women's water polo team (15-10) lost 9-7 to No. 13 Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon in non-conference play at the Burns Aquatic Center.

 

UCI took a 2-1 lead with 6:01 left in the second period as freshman Cortney Collyer scored for the `Eaters. Nicole Hughes tied the match at 2-2 with 3:25 left in the second period. UCI built a 4-2 as junior Nicole Flacco scored 1:30 into the third period giving UCI a two goal lead. The Lions then scored five unanswered goals to take a 7-4 lead with 6:22 left in the match. Senior Jessica Lewis then cut the lead to 7-5 with 5:40 left. The `Eaters were unable to get any closer as the two teams traded goals twice over the final four minutes of the match to give LMU the 9-7 lead.

 

Senior keeper Lauren Machanis had nine saves for the `Eaters. Keeper Eliana Arellano had seven saves for LMU.

The Anteaters will next compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in San Diego. The `Eaters will be either the 7th or 8th seed in the Championship based on the Arizona State/San Diego State match Saturday. If ASU wins, UCI will be No. 8. If SDSU wins, the `Eaters will be the No. 7 seed. The Championship begins Thursday, April 24th at the Aztec Aquaplex.
