Anteaters head to Northern California for three matches

NO. 10 ANTEATERS AT UC DAVIS, CAL, PACIFIC: The No. 10 UC Irvine women's water polo team (7-5, 1-2) will head to Northern California to take on No. 11 UC Davis Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center. The team will then play a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches as they travel to Berkeley to face No. 5 California at 12:00 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The team will then head to Stockton to face Pacific at 12:00 p.m. at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.

 

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The No. 11 Aggies are 9-5 overall this season after placing sixth at the UCI Invitational over the weekend. UCD keeper Casey Hines has 64 saves on the year.

The No. 5 Golden Bears are 9-4 overall after finishing third at the UCI Invitational and are 2-1 in MPSF play. Grace Reynolds leads Cal with 24 goals on the year.

The Tigers are 3-9 overall and 0-4 in MPSF play entering the week and will host Long Beach State before meeting UCI. Kellie Fletcher is the leading scorer for UOP.

IRVINE INVITATIONAL PREVIEW: The UC Irviine Invitational will feature 16 of the top 17 teams in the country. There will be 16 matches played each day with eight at both the Anteater Aquatics Complex and Corona del Mar High School. The Anteaters open the tournament facing San Jose State at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.


WEEK IN REVIEW: The Anteaters defeated UC Santa Barbara 7-4 in MPSF play. The team then went 2-2 at the UC Irvine Invitational to take 11th place. UCI beat UC San Diego 6-2 and
Long Beach State 8-5. The `Eaters lost 12-3 to San Jose State and 9-8 to San Diego State. Junior Gianna Rossi (Fresno/Central HS) led UCI with seven goals on the week. Keeper Lauren Machanis had 37 saves over the five games.


UCI RANKED 10TH IN NATION
: The Anteaters are ranked 10th in the country in the National Collegiate Water Polo poll. UCI ended 2007 ranked 10th nationally. The team was ranked as high as No. 4 last season which is the highest the Anteaters have been ranked in school history.


ANTEATER LEADERS:
Senior Jessica Lewis (Los Alamitos HS) and Gianna Rossi lead UCI with 17 goals each on the year. Junior Sarah Frost (Santa Barbara HS) is third with 12 goals and junior Julia Fancher (La Verne/Bonita HS) has 10 goals this season. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis has 92 saves this season to lead the team.


ANTEATERS IN THE RECORD BOOK
: Junior Gianna Rossi is fourth all-time at UCI with 113 goals. Senior Jessica Lewis is fifth with 95 goals. Junior Julia Fancher is seventh all-time with 78 goals. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis holds the UCI all-time record with 754 career saves.
