'Eaters travel to Bay Area

NO. 8 ANTEATERS AT SAN JOSE STATE, STANFORD: The No. 8 UC Irvine women's water polo team (13-8, 4-5) will travel to the Bay Area for a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches. The team will play at No. 9 San Jose State Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the Campus Aquatics Center. The `Eaters then head to Stanford to take on the No. 2 Cardinal Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Avery Stadium.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The No. 9 Spartans are 12-11 overall and 4-6 in MPSF play. SJSU beat the `Eaters 12-3 earlier this year at the UCI Invitational.
The No. 2 Cardinal are 19-3 overall and 8-1 in MPSF play. Lauren Silver is Stanford's leading scorer.
WEEK IN REVIEW: The `Eaters went 1-1 in MPSF play as they defeated Cal State Northridge 7-5 and lost 13-9 at Hawaii. Senior Jessica Lewis (Los Alamitos HS) led the team with 4 goals on the week. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis (Carlsbad HS) had 15 saves over the two matches.
UCI RANKED 8TH IN NATION: The Anteaters are ranked 8th in the country in the National Collegiate Water Polo poll. UCI ended 2007 ranked 10th nationally. The team was ranked as high as No. 4 last season which is the highest the Anteaters have been ranked in school history.
ANTEATER LEADERS: Senior Jessica Lewis leads the team with 31 goals on the year. Junior Gianna Rossi (Fresno/Central HS) is second with 27 goals on the year. Sophomore Kat Plummer (Thousand Oaks HS) is third with 24 goals. Junior Sarah Frost (Santa Barbara HS) is fourth with 21 goals this season. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis has 165 saves this season to lead the team.
ANTEATERS IN THE RECORD BOOK: Junior Gianna Rossi is fourth all-time at UCI with 123 goals. Senior Jessica Lewis is fifth with 114 goals. Junior Julia Fancher is seventh all-time with 86 goals. Senior keeper Lauren Machanis holds the UCI all-time record with 864 career saves.
