UCLA student-athletes and coaches assembled in Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday evening to take part in the spring session of the Wooden Academy, an event which emphasizes building character, leadership and teamwork.
The evening featured legendary Bruin athletes Sue Enquist (softball) and Jackie Joyner-Kersee (basketball/Track & Field). Joyner-Kersee shared her story of being a Bruin, the hard work she endured, and the passion she exemplified in becoming one of the greatest female athletes of all time. Enquist shared her experiences as both a player and coach, while emphasizing the responsibility that each UCLA student-athlete has on working with the "champion within them."
Rafer Johnson, a former UCLA track and field great and Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon, was also in attendance last night.
The Wooden Academy officially kicked off in the fall of 2007 with Coach John Wooden and Ann Meyers Drysdale. The goal of the Wooden Academy is to educate, develop and support Bruin student-athletes in their pursuit to become successful leaders at UCLA, and in preparing for life after sport. The pillars of the Wooden Academy are Leadership, Character, and Teamwork.
