Gauchos Drop Davis in Conference Dual Meet

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swimming teams beat out conference rival UC Davis Friday. Erin Yamamoto and Brittany Borowitz led the women over the Aggies 170-123. While Matt Bartlett and Chris Good helped the men overtake their competitors 156-138. In other news, the men's team climbed the ranks one spot to number 24 on the CSCAA list of top-25 dual meet teams.

The Gauchos jumped right into the meet taking the first and second place spots in the women's 200 medley relay. The "A" team made up of Naomi Javanifard, Sara Nicponski, Erin Yamamoto, and Courtney Bauer won the race in 1:44.10. Matt Bartlett, Jeff Sudbury, Danny McClary, and Bradley Matsumoto won the men's 200 medley relay in 1:31.87.

Sophomore Jessica Schwalb beat out freshman Kelsey Lewis in the 1000 free for first place (10:35.19). Yamamoto got her first individual win of the day in the 200 free (1:53.30), while sophomore Scott Vogelgesang took the men's version in 1:41.56.

Javanifard kept the winning streak alive by placing first in the 100 back (58.53). In the men's 100 back, Bartlett out swam teammate Chris Good to take first place (51.22). Freshman Brittany Borowitz won the 200 fly by in 2:06.36. Taking second place in the event was sophomore Katie Ure (2:07.35).

 

 

Sophomore Anne Marie May swam the 50 free in 23.71 to grab first place. Matsumoto got the gold in the men's 50 free, clocking in at 20.86. Bauer nabbed first in the 100 free (52.69), while junior Joe Wood beat out the Aggie's Russ Underwood for the win in the men's 100 free (46.23).

In the women's 200 back, Ure beat out her Davis competitor for first place (2:06.94). Good was able to accomplish the same feat, beating out Bartlett in the 200 back in 1:50.60.

For her second win of the day, Yamamoto chose the 100 fly. She completed the race in 56.44. Borowitz came up with her second win in the 200 IM (2:08.60). McClary busted out a 1:51.92 in the men's 200 IM to take first.

UCSB swept the 400 free relays with the women winning in 3:30.34 and the men clearing the field in 3:04.71.

The men's team entered the final two events tied with the Aggies with 129 points. The Gachos held on though and went 1-3-4 in the 200 IM and 1-3 in the 400 freestyle relay to earn the 18-point victory.

The Gauchos get their feet wet tomorrow, Feb. 2, against Pacific. The meet will be in Stockton and the start time is 11:00 AM
