SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team snapped its three game slide with a 4-3 victory over the University of Pacific this afternoon at the Rob Gym Tennis Courts. With the win, the Gauchos even their record at 5-5 for the season, and improve to 2-1 overall in the Big West.
Seniors Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe put a hault to their three game doubles losing streak when they dispatched Jolanta Twarowska and Olga Gumenyuk 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. The Gauchos earned the doubles point when freshman Jill Damion and sophomore Asagi Onaga defeated the Tiger pair of Svenia Arens and Sasha Fisher 8-3, at the No. 2 doubles slot.
The No. 3 singles player, Scatliffe, parlayed her doubles victory into a singles win when she took down Gumenyek 6-3, 6-2. The Tigers responded at No. 2, when Arens beat Damion in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Fisher tied the match at 2-2 for the Tigers when she ousted Kausen 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. The Gauchos answered back when Marta Simic grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 victory from Twarowska, at the No. 1 singles spot.
The final two singles matches that decided the winner both went the distance. UOP notched the first win at No. 4, as Nezhura outlasted Onaga 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to even the score at 3-3. Hausman sealed the deal for UCSB when she survived Schuhmacher 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in a thrilling game at No. 5.
The Gauchos continue their lengthy homestand this Monday when they take on Washington State. First serve at the Rob Gym Tennis Courts is set for 1:30 p.m. (PT).
