Men's Results JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - It was another history-making performance for freshman USC Upstate women's track and field distance runner Emily Tangwar and a big award for freshman men's track and field athlete Perrish Goggins at the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championships at East Tennessee State Saturday. Tangwar, who had won the women's 3000 meters in day one of the competition, was victorious in both the women's mile run and the women's 5000 meters in day two, thereby earning the women's most outstanding track performer award and the women's most outstanding freshman performer award. Earlier this season, she finished runner-up in the women's cross country meet and was named female most outstanding freshman as well. "I was in good form this weekend," Tangwar said. "I was just doing what my coaches were telling me and I worked out really hard on my workouts to prepare." "Dominant. (Emily) ran two amazing races today," USC Upstate men's and women's track and field head coach Jimmy Stephens said. "The mile was tough for her becausse she was boxed in heading into the last lap, but she came back and won it and she was great in the 3000 meters as well. She's just an amazing girl with fine character."
"This has been a great experience," Goggins said. "My first time here in the A-Sun and I came out, worked hard, did what I had to do and I succeeded." "Perrish had an awesome meet," Stephens said. "He broke the points record in the heptathlon and that's awesome. He scratched in his first jump of the triple jump and could've had a top three jump, but it was a good performance from him. The men's team took sixth place in the team standings while the women's team finished eighth. Stephens also said that his throwers once again set personal records in their throws and the women's 1600 meter relay team had a great showing. Overall, Stephens said this is something that the program can build on. "I'm just really proud of the team," Stephens said. "When you build one from scratch, it's not always easy, but we had some good performances today. We have a foundation in place to hopefully compete for a conference title someday." Upstate starts its outdoor track and field season next Saturday, March 8, at Charleston Southern. |
