Birmingham, Ala. - Tyler Tucker turned in a 71 in cold, wet and windy conditions to storm to the top of the leaderboard, claiming the individual title at the BSC Classic hosted by Birmingham Southern at the 6,760 yard, par 72 Oxmoor Valley Golf Club Tuesday afternoon. Tucker's performance highlighted a strong team tournament for the Spartans as Upstate claimed the team championship by 34 strokes.

Tucker became the third Upstate player to win an individual title this season and the fourth in the last two years. Josh Gallman, who finished second to Tucker in the tournament, won the individual title at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and the CFSC/Stetson Invitational in the fall, while Michael Lawrence won the individual championship at Rutgers Invitational in the 2007-08 season opener. Baxter Culler won two individual titles last year.

"The round was pretty rough," said Tucker. "It was cold and the wind was pretty bad. But, I kept hitting some solid shots and gave myself opportunities to get some birdies. Everyone on the team is trying to contribute the best they can and it winds up that different people have played well enough to win."

The team win by Upstate in the tournament marks the second team championship in 2007-08. The Spartans won the team title in the season-opening Rutgers Invitational. It marks the third team championship in the last two seasons.

"It was a good team event," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "All five guys contributed throughout the tournament. Tyler shot an incredible round today. Nobody saw par or better. Everyone said that 75 or 76 would be a good round. He just kept hitting solid shots. There was a steady misty rain and the wind was pretty bad, gusting to 25 mph. It was impressive."

Upstate shot a 303 in the final round for a 902 tournament total. All three rounds turned in by the Spartans were the three lowest rounds of the tournament. The 303 was 12 strokes better than the second lowest team total of the day turned in by Rollins. The 315 by Rollins allowed the Tars to move into second place in the final standings. Birmingham Southern was third at 948 and was followed by Army (951), Logan CC (981), William Carey (986), Trevecca Nazarene (1013), Shenahdoah (1037) and Wheeling Jesuit (1058).

Tucker finished with a 71 Tuesday to finish with a 224 total. Josh Gallman closed with a 76 for a 228 total, finishing in a tie for second with Rollins' James McDonough. Baxter Culler, who entered the final round in the lead, finished with a 228 total and a fourth-place finish. Michael Lawrence was sixth with a 232 total, while Jamie Lightsey finished with a 236 effort and tied for 13th. Jeffery Horton, who competed as an individual in the event, finished 17th with a 239 total.
