Oneonta, Ala. - Josh Gallman fired a 4-under-par 68 in the final round of the Samford Intercollegiate to win the individual championship at the 6,987-yard, par 72 Limestone Golf Course. It marked his fourth individual title of the year. Gallman's efforts helped lead Upstate to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

"Taking fourth place in a challenging field is very encouraging," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "We got contributions from all five players during the tournament. It is very encouraging as we move through the rest of the spring.

"We led the tournament making 71 birdies," said Lawton. "The course provided opportunities to make birdies, but it also made you pay of you made bad shots."

Gallman is on quite a role this year. He won two individual championships in the fall, taking first place at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and the CFSC/Stetson Invitational. He won the Lonnie D. Small Classic last week and has now won back-to-back tournaments. He won this week, in part, on his ability to make birdies. He recorded 19 birdies in 54 holes in the tournament.

"I am pretty excited about the number of birdies I was able to make," said Gallman. "I guess the key to how well I've been playing is the fact tat I keep hitting greens and making putts. I've been able to keep the ball in play and stay away from the big numbers."

"Josh is on every round and every shot," said Lawton. "He is very competitive every time he tees it up."

Upstate finished fourth in the team standings, turning in rounds of 289, 289 and 290 for an 868 total. New Orleans won the tournament with an 860 total, firing a 283 in the final round. Eastern Kentucky was second at 863 and was followed by West Florida (867), Upstate (868), Samford (876), Murray State (876), Troy (892), Illinois State (893), Austin Peay (906), UT-Martin (907), Winthrop (908), Lipscomb (918), Tennessee Tech (920), Tennessee State (934), Nicholls State (935), Southern Illinois (945) and Morehead State (945) in the 18-team tournament. Seven teams that participated in the tournament are currently ranked in the top 200 by the Golfstat rankings.

Gallman led all Upstate individuals, but the Spartans got solid contributions from all five players. Tyler Tucker, buoyed by his hole-in-one Monday, finished 12th in the tournament with a 217 total. Michael Lawrence was tied for 16th at 220. Baxter Culler finished with a 227 total to finish in a tie for 40th, while Jamie Lightsey finished with a 230 total and a tie for 50th.
