ATLANTA, Ga. - Three three-set singles wins for the USC Upstate men's tennis team helped it win its first dual match at the Division I level, as the Spartans downed Georgia Southern, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Georgia Tech's Bill Moore Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans will face Georgia Tech on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Spartans earned the doubles point, with junior Leandro Osorio (Quillota, Chile/Subercaseaux) and senior Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso (Lima, Peru/Cambridge College) posted an 8-1 win over Gregory Bekkers and Mark Paetz and sophomores Jack Roux (Santiago, Chile/Subercaseaux) and Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) downed Phillip Prins and Matthew Sands fell, 8-5. With his doubles win, Gonzales-Orbegoso became just the sixth player in school history to reach 90 combined career wins. He added his 44th career singles win, beating Mark Paetz at the No. 5 slot, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. He now has 47 doubles wins and 44 singles wins, with his 44 singles wins passing Rudy Vargas (1991-95) for eighth in school history. Roux won his match over Prins, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 singles to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead before a loss at the No. 1 singles made it 2-1. However, the Spartans won the final four matches to close the match, with Osorio downing Sands, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 6 and sophomore Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) downing Borja Malet at No. 2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. To close the meet, Tori downed Bekkers, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Gonzales-Orbegoso won at the No. 5 slot in the tightest match of the meet. Results Doubles competition Match Notes: |
