SPARTANBURG, S.C. - A dominating win at No. 1 singles by and junior Sandy Franz (Duesseldorf, Germany/Berufskolleg Hilden) over Bobby Lake helped the USC Upstate men's tennis team clinch a 5-2 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. Franz won the match in typical methodical style, 6-2, 6-3, to become the 11th player in school history to reach 40 career wins. The Spartans (5-2) started off the match by winning the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Franz and sophomore Jack Roux (Santiago, Chile/Subercaseaux) kicked off the doubles matches with an 8-2 win over David Doverspike and Bobby Lake before sophomore Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru)/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) and sophomore Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) posted the deciding win for the Spartans, taking an 8-5 decision against Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance. The Mountaineers (2-2) started the singles results with a win at No. 4 to even the match, but junior Leandro Osorio (Quillota, Chile/Subercaseaux) posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles to give the Spartans the lead and Franz's win put the Spartans up, 3-1. The gap closed after a Mountaineer win at No. 3, but senior Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso (Lima, Peru/Cambridge College) posted his 46th career singles win in three-set style at No. 5 singles, downing Jacobs, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. In the most dramatic match of the night, Airaldi came back to win at No. 2 singles over Brookshaw, 0-6, 7-5, 7-5. He faced three match points while down 5-3, but came back to win the next four games in a row, breaking Brookshaw's serve twice and taking the last game, even though Brookshaw had fought off three straight match points, posting two aces to charge back into the game. The Spartans will open up their Atlantic Sun Conference slate in nine days, when Mercer hits the USC Upstate Tennis Complex courts for a 2 p.m. match.
