CLEMSON, S.C. - Sophomore Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) and sophomore Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) each posted two singles wins and paired together for two doubles wins to pace the USC Upstate men's tennis team to two dual match wins at the Clemson Spring Classic at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Playing three dual meets in two days, the Spartans have been a perfect 3-0, posting a 7-0 win over Florida A&M in the morning and a 5-2 win over The Citadel in the afternoon after posting the school's first Atlantic Sun Conference win, 6-1, over Mercer on Friday. In the process, senior Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso (Lima, Peru/Cambridge College) became the fourth player in school history to cross the 100-combined win mark, thanks to three wins on the day, two in singles play and one in doubles. Gonzales-Orbegoso, who has 49 career singles wins and 52 doubles wins, joins Diego Sist, Jose Luis Reyes and Stefan Dumitrescu, who were all Division II All-Americans, in the club. The Spartans (8-2 overall) started off their time at the Clemson Spring Classic by posting a 7-0 win over Florida A&M (4-5). Upstate took the doubles point by posting wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 slot, with Gonzales-Orbegoso and junior Leandro Osorio (Quillota, Chile/Subercaseaux) downing Artion Podgainii and Simbarashe Happy, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles and Tori and Airaldi downing Maurice Wamukowa and Michael Moore, 8-2, at No. 2. The Spartans cruised in singles play, with junior Sandy Franz (Duesseldorf, Germany/Berufskolleg Hilden) downing Podgainii, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, Airaldi downing Clifford Malivert, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 2 and Tori defeating Happy, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3. At No. 4, sophomore Jack Roux (Santiago, Chile/Subercaseaux) defeated Moore in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, Gonzales-Orbegoso downed Wamukowa, 6-2, 6-4, and sophomore Arnaldo Lovera (Caracas, Venezuela) added a 6-3, 7-5 win over Paul Paige at No. 6. The Spartans capped their time at the spring classic with a 5-2 win over The Citadel (1-4) in the afternoon, as Franz posted his 80th career combined win (42 singles, 38 doubles) with a win at No. 3 doubles, joining a select group of 10 Upstate players to reach the mark. Franz and Roux beat Frederic Petrilli and Martin King, 8-4 and Airaldi and Tori beat James Eason and Alberto Diaz at No. 2 doubles to help Upstate earn the doubles point. In singles play, Airaldi was ahead one set on Yufo Sutantio, 6-1, before Sutantio retired in No. 2 singles. Roux followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eason at No. 3 singles. After a loss at No. 6, Tori clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Diaz and Gonzales-Orbegoso wrapped up the match with a 7-6 (6), 3-6, 10-8 win over King at No. 5, winning the match in a super tiebreaker. The Spartans will play their fourth match in three days on Sunday when they hit the road for Big South foe, Winthrop, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
