Final Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Sophomore Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) made quick work of Andrew Veeder, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles for his 26th singles win of the season to move one shy of the school record on Friday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex, helping the USC Upstate men's tennis team down Gardner-Webb, 5-0, in a rain-shortened match. Airaldi is just one win shy of the 16-year old school record of 27 wins set by James Homan in 1992.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 14-5 overall and 7-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Gardner-Webb falls to 12-11 overall and 4-4 in the Atlantic Sun.

Upstate won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point in the eighth straight conference match, as sophomore Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Airaldi handled Jamie Lawlor and Ryan Bernthal, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Jack Roux (Santiago, Chile/Subercaseaux) and junior Sandy Franz (Duesseldorf, Germany/Berufskolleg Hilden) added an 8-2 win over Grant VanRensburg and Joshua Ray at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Airaldi finished first to give Upstate a 2-0 lead and sophomore Arnaldo Lovera (Caracas, Venezuela) followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lawlor at No. 6 singles. Roux downed Altmayer, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Tori closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carlos Quijano at No. 4 singles.

Upstate will close out its home slate in the 2008 season with a tough test as it faces Campbell on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Camels enter the match at 14-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
