SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso (Lima, Peru/Cambridge College), thanks to a singles and doubles win against Davidson on Saturday, has earned the USC Upstate men's tennis team's first Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors, the conference office in Macon, Ga., announced Friday afternoon. Gonzales-Orbegoso posted a three-set win over Davidson's Sam Burns at No. 5 singles on Friday, dropping the first set 7-5 before coming back with 6-4 and 6-3 wins. The win was critical in the match, as it gave the Spartans a 3-1 lead in the match before they fell, 4-3. He started the day by posting a doubles win with teammate Leandro Osorio, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. The senior from Peru, moved into a tie for eighth in singles wins at Upstate, tying Rudy Vargas (1991-95), with 43 and he enters this week needing just one win to reach 90 combined (singles and doubles) in his career. The Spartans head to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of a tri-meet with Georgia Tech, who they face on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both meets are at the Bill Moore Tennis complex. |
