Final Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - It will take one more win for the USC Upstate women's tennis team to earn a share of the school's first Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title, as the Spartans handled Gardner-Webb, 5-0, in a rain-shortened match on Friday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. The Spartans improved to 15-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the league while Gardner-Webb fell to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in the A-Sun.

Upstate will face a tough test in Campbell on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex when it tries to clinch a share of the A-Sun title, as the Camels enter the contest with a 14-6 overall record and a 5-4 conference mark. The Spartans also face ETSU on Wednesday at 3 p.m. If the team wins both matches, it will take the A-Sun regular season title outright.

The rain forced doubles play to be cancelled. With just the singles matches being contested, the Spartans got off to a strong start as junior Vivian Neuenschwander (Arequipa, Peru/Max-Uhle) downed Allie Mills, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Senior Susana Hernandez (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano) followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jenny Gomez at No. 2. Senior Diana Martinez (Medellin, Colombia/Nuestra Senora del Rosario) added a 6-2, 7-5 win over Monica Walser at No. 5 singles and freshman Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) added a 7-6, 7-6 win over Rita Gouveia at No. 4 singles. Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El-Angel) rounded out the Spartans' wins with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 win over Laura Kriett at No. 1 singles.

For Novo, it was her 27th singles win of the season, as she tied the Upstate tennis program record with James Homan, who went 27-6 as a member of the men's program in 1991-92.
