The UIU baseball team took the field at Ouchita Baptist for an early Sunday morning match up with the Panthers of Drury. The Peacocks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning and held a one-run advantage heading into the sixth inning. At the end of the sixth inning the Panthers took the lead by one, 6-5, with three runs in their half of the inning. Drury blew the game open in the next inning as they put six runners across the plate and went on to win the game 13-7. After falling behind 1-0, the Peacock bats fought back and tied the game at one. Nick Fjelland doubled to right field and stole third before coming home on a Cody Jones ground out to short. UIU gave up another run in the second, but stormed back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. T.J. Johnson opened the inning with a double to left and was chased home on a Marcus Thompson triple down the right field line. Seth Fox drove the second run in with two outs as he singled to left. In the fifth inning the teams traded runs. Fjelland drove the Peacocks' run in with a single that drove Kreston Albright home. Drury took the lead in the next half inning when they scored three runs on four hits. UIU's run in the sixth cut the deficit to 6-5 when Erik Sorensen's double pushed Thompson across the plate. Drury took control in the seventh inning scoring six runs on five hits to take control with a 12-5 lead. The Peacocks threatened to rally in the eighth inning but only managed two runs on two hits. The short rally was fueled by Jones' single up the middle. Upper Iowa had men on first and second with no outs in the ninth inning, but could not push any more runners across the plate. Brian Solemsaas took the mound for the first time since the spring of 2006 in an Upper Iowa uniform and pitched competitively for the Peacocks. The junior threw 6 innings allowing 6 runs on 11 hits while striking out four and walking none. Upper Iowa was led by four main bats on Sunday; Fjelland (2-5, 2 rbi, 1 run), Johnson (2-5, 1 run), Thompson (3-5, 2 runs, 1 rbi), and Seth Fox (2-3, 1 run, 1rbi) all hit well on the day. The Peacocks were originally scheduled to travel to Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri for three games this coming weekend. Those games have been cancelled due to weather. The games will not be made up. Upper Iowa will next take the diamond in Edwardsville, Illinois at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville for a two-game set on Saturday, Feb. 23, and Sunday, Feb. 24. Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game will begin at 12 p.m. |
