Upper Iowa - Northern State Dual Results
The #9 Upper Iowa wrestling team traveled to Aberdeen, South Dakota to take the mat against the #20 Wolves of Northern State. The contest was a match up of the two teams with an undefeated conference record in the Northern Sun. The Peacocks used pins by Tyler Mumbulo and Travis Eggers, as well as wins by Jacob Pedersen, Brady Hakeman, and Dan Goodson, to defeat the Wolves 21-16 and move into first place in the conference. Mumbulo (125, #2 NCAA) gave the Peacocks a great start with a victory by fall (2:45) over Corbin Surat with 15 seconds left in the first period. Jacob Pedersen (133) continued the Peacocks winning ways in the second match of the dual as he picked up a 10-7 decision over Rick Schiley. Pedersen's win was fueled by a reversal and near fall in the second period. With a 9-0 lead, Upper Iowa sent Steven Baker to the mat to face Dave Schiley. Schiley used a takedown and two near falls in the second period to win his seventh straight match. Baker was defeated by major decision 10-1. At 149, Tee Adams (#4 NCAA), who has been battling a rib injury, returned to the mat after a two week hiatus and was met by an aggressive Ryan Larsen. Larsen trailed Adams 2-1, but used a takedown and near fall points in the third period to register a 7-2 upset decision and pull the Wolves to within two, 9-7. Travis Eggers (157, #4 NCAA) toed the line looking to set the visitors back on theright track. The sophomore registered a reversal and near fall points in the second and took a 7-2 lead before ending the match with a pinfall (4:42) with just 18 seconds left in the second period. The victory gave UIU a 15-7 lead. Brett Hakeman took the mat at 165 pounds for the injured Mitch Norton and wrestled well up a weight class from his normal position. Hakeman scored on a takedown in the first period, but surrendered the lead on a takedown in the second. Hakeman was defeated by Phillip Downs 3-2. Brett's older brother Brady stepped onto the mat next for UIU and picked up a 6-4 victory over Donnie Bowden. Hakeman used a pair of takedowns to fuel his victory. Northern State roared back at the next two weight classes picking up decisions at 184 and 197 pounds. Cale Cornermann defeated Tony Gehling 8-1 with two takedowns in the third period and Todd Naasz defeated Matt Norton 7-5 with a takedown in the sudden victory overtime. The two wins put the dual's outcome in the hands of the heavyweight match up as NSU trailed UIU 18-16. Dan Goodson (#5 NCAA) met Jared Little on the mat. Both Goodson and Little were unable to score any points through the first two periods, but Goodson secured the dual victory for the Peacocks in the third as he scored an escape, takedown and a riding time point. The decision gave Upper Iowa the 21-16 victory. The Peacocks will stay on the road and face the #11 Huskies of St. Cloud State on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.) before returning home to face the #14 Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead with the conference title on the line. The Dragons and Peacocks will meet in Dorman Gym on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. |
