Upper Iowa - St. Cloud State Dual Results
The #9 Upper Iowa wrestling team wrestled in a Sunday afternoon affair at St. Cloud State this past weekend for a dual with another future NSIC-foe. The #11 Huskies, fueled by wins at seven of the ten weight classes, upset the Peacocks 27-12. The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a win at 125, but St. Cloud took control picking up wins in the next four weight classes. The Peacocks won matches at 165 and 285, but lost the match and saw their dual meet record slip to 6-5 overall. Tyler Mumbulo (125, #2 NCAA) started the dual off on the right foot for the Peacocks as he dominated his match with Westy Hanson. Mumbulo recorded a takedown inside of the first fifteen seconds and never looked back. The junior won by decision, 7-0, and gave UIU a 3-0 lead. The Huskies then took control of the dual by winning the next four weight classes. Josh Williams and UIU's Jacob Pedersen wrestled at 133 pounds. The two were tied at 2-2 after the first period and 4-4 after the second period. Both registered reversals in the third period, but a late escape and riding time point gave Williams the edge, 8-6, and tied the dual 3-3. Gabe Suarez and Chad Kubasch picked up wins over the Peacocks' Layne Greedy (141) and Derek Stolarzyk (149). Suarez won the 141 pound match by the count of 22-8 earning a major decision, while Kubasch won the 149 pound meeting with a 10-5 decision using a five-point second period to score the victory. Heading into the 157 pound match, St. Cloud held a 10-3 advantage. At 157 pounds, Travis Eggers (#4 NCAA) toed the line against John Sundgren. While Sundgren led 3-2 after the first period, Eggers was able to rally back and led 5-3 heading into the final period. In the third period Sundgren caught Eggers off balance and scored a takedown and registered a pinfall (6:35) for the upset victory. Sean Washington did his best at 165 pounds to right the ship for Upper Iowa, who trailed 16-3. Washington brought the Peacocks back into the match as he won his match with a pin in the first period (1:01). Washington took advantage of Tom Anderson as he attempted to roll away from the Peacock grappler. With the victory, the Peacocks only trailed 16-9. The Huskies extended their lead out to 19-9 at 174 pounds as Derek Skala earned a 9-6 decision over UIU's Brady Hakeman. Hakeman trailed 5-2 after the first period, but rallied in the second period to trail by just one, 6-5. Skala scored three points in the third on an escape, a penalty point, and a riding time point to get the win. Tony Gehling almost came up with an upset at 184 pounds. The Huskies' Brad Padgett entered the match with a record of 26-6, but he got all he could handle from Gehling. Padgett trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 after the second period. Gehling tried to hold off the Husky, but Padgett scored two takedowns in the third and tied the match and move to a sudden victory period. The St. Cloud wrestler wasted no time in registering the winning takedown early in the overtime to claim a 9-7 victory. Matt Norton faced Nick Wilkes (#8 NCAA) at 197 pounds. Wilkes controlled the match as he recorded four near falls and defeated Norton 18-3 for the technical fall victory. The result gave the home team a 27-9 lead. In the heavyweight matchup, Dan Goodson (#5 NCAA) took the mat against the Huskies' Chris Schiewe. The two wrestlers each scored an escape in the first three rounds as the match headed into a sudden victory period. Neither wrestler scored in the minute, so the match headed to the first tiebreaker. Goodson registered an escape and did not allow Schiewe to do the same. Goodson's 2-1 decision gave the Peacocks their third win of the day, but signaled the end of the dual and a 27-12 loss. The #9 Peacocks will host the #14 Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead this Thursday night, Valentine's Day, for a share of the Northern Sun Conference Wrestling Championship. Thursday night's dual with the Dragons will be a WHITE OUT. All fans are encouraged to wear white to the match to show support for the Peacocks as they take their shot at back-to-back NSIC Titles. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. |
