Upper Iowa Splits NSIC Double Header Versus Wayne State

The Peacock softball team welcomed the Wildcats of Wayne State College to the softball field at Eischeid Complex in Fayette today for a Northern Sun Conference double header. The Peacocks entered the game with a 4-1 NSIC record, while the Wildcats came in with a 4-3 conference record.

Upper Iowa scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth when Nikki Davis single home Kami Appelt. Wayne State tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the seventh, but the home team stole the victory in their final at bat when they scored a run on an error with two outs.

In game two, both teams put a run on the scoreboard in the first inning and Wayne was able to add a run in the third and fourth innings. Upper Iowa rallied to take a 4-3 lead heading into the sixth inning. The big hit of the rally came off the bat of Appelt, who homered to left field to open the fourth inning. At the end of seven innings, UIU and WSC were knotted at 4-4. In the eighth inning, Davis hit a long shot off the wall in centerfield. Had the ball been two feet higher, the Peacocks would have had a walk-off win, but UIU was unable to drive the runner in. After the leadoff double was stranded on second, Wayne State pushed two runs across in their half of the ninth and Upper Iowa was unable to answer.

Nikki Davis went 5-7 today at the plate and also pitched eight innings allowing 4 earned runs on 13 hits. Danielle DeSerano hit 2-5 in game two scoring two runs for the day. Christy Loan earned the decision in game one thanks to throwing seven innings while allowing five hits and one earned run.

The Peacocks have had to reschedule tomorrow's game with the Mavericks of Minnesota State. Due to the forecasted weather, the Mavericks and Peacocks will be getting togeter on April 29th with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
