Feb. 24, 2008

The Peacock women's tennis team traveled to the Baseline Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Friday to open their second run in the Northern Sun Conference. Upper Iowa met the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead for the dual. The Peacocks took command after splitting two close doubles matches to win the final doubles match and five of the six singles matches on the afternoon. Upper Iowa notched their first conference victory by the score of 7-2.

Jennifer Bradfield and Kasey Huisman combined for an 8-6 victory at #1 doubles against Ashley Taborsky and Maria Cederberg. The Dragons' Ellie Matheson and Laura Beng took the #2 doubles match by the same 8-6 result over the Peacocks' Mallery Cox and Erin Kelley. UIU claimed the advantage heading into the singles matches when Kelsey Montgomery tagged up with Betsy Limburg for the convincing 8-1 win over Kayla Parker and Traci Pesta.

The Peacocks dominated the singles competition winning five of the six matches to claim their 7-2 victory. Bradfield defeated Taborsky 6-1, 6-1. Huisman came out on the right side of a 6-2, 6-1 result against Matheson. Cox only surrendered one game in her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Claudia Irina. The lone singles' win for MSU Moorhead came at #4 where Beng defeated Montgomery 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Kelley defeated Cederberg 6-4, 6-2, while Nicole Henry picked up the win against Parker 6-2, 6-4 to close out the Peacock victory.

"We're excited to get a decisive win against this team; last year they beat us 6-3," said head coach Chad Fenwick. The Peacocks finished 3rd in the regular season last year behind the Dragons and Warriors of Winona State.

The Peacocks will head back to the practice courts over the next two weeks. The team will next see in action in Hilton Head, South Carolina over UIU's spring break. Upper Iowa will play six matches over four days, Mar. 10-13, on their trip.
