May 12, 2008

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Sarah Reeves (Elkton, Md.) of the UMass Softball team has been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week for the week of May 12. Reeves hit a game-tying two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Atlantic-10 Semifinals to help propel the Minutewomen to the Atlantic-10 Championship and eventually their 20th Atlantic-10 Tournament title. UMass Softball will face Princeton at 5 PM on Friday at the UMass Softball Complex. The Minutewomen are the No. 2 seed in the Amherst Regional.

Reeves went 3-for-9 during the A-10 Tournament and was named First Team All-Conference. Her two singles, two runs scored, home run and 4 RBI also earned her a spot on the Atlantic-10 All-Tournament Team.

For the season, Reeves is hitting .298 overall with nine home runs and 36 RBI. She also has 16 extra base hits, and is currently on a 13 game hitting streak. Her .546 slugging percentage is good for third on the team. In Atlantic-10 play, Reeves is batting .333 with 6 home runs and 19 RBI.

In addition to UMass and Princeton, Stanford is the top-seeded team in the Amherst region and will face Stanford on Friday at 2:30 PM. The winner of the Amherst Regional will advance to play the winner of the College Station, Tx. Regional, which includes Texax A&M, Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech and Auburn.

Reeves will be honored at the weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday at Noon in Campus Center room 1009. Guest speakers will include Athletic Director John McCutheon and the Spring Scholar Athlete Award winners.
