Coleman Claims High Jump At Carolina Chick-fil-A Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field team was back in action again on Saturday when the Tar Heels hosted the Carolina Chick-fil-A Invitational in the Eddie Smith Field House. Freshman Patience Coleman improved upon her provisional mark in the high jump as she cleared 5-11.25 for the victory in one of many top Tar Heel performances.

In women's track action, Shardae Anderson, Ashley Hill and Vanneisha Ivy all competed in the 60-meter dash and the trio were successful in advancing to the finals where Ivy finished third with a time of 7.71. Anderson and Hill were not far behind as they finished eighth and 11th, respectively.

Anderson improved on her eighth place showing in the 60 by dominating the 200 dash with a race of 25.01 for the top spot in the race. Hill was not far behind Anderson's pace as she finished in eighth with a race of 25.71. Alexandra Coppadge finished 25th with a time of 26.54.

Dominique Jackson fell just short of a victory in the 400 as her time of 58.08 fell just short of Jasmine Jones-Green's mark of 58.01. Lauren Holesh claimed the top spot in the mile as she crossed the line in 4:57.14 for the victory. Kristy Longman and Taylor Parkes competed in the 800 with the duo picking up a pair of top 10 finishes. Longman finished in third (2:15.66) ahead of Parkes who took home sixth (2:18.86). Morgan Stengel's bid for the 3,000 title fell short by just three seconds as she finished second in a time of 10:19.76.

 

 

Vanneisha Ivy barely missed an NCAA provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles as she finished in 8.47 just short of the 8.43 mark for second place. Alexandra Coppadge also represented the Tar Heels in the race as she finished sixth in a time of 8.94.

Coleman was one of many highlights in the field events for Carolina as she improved on her season-best of 5-10 in the high jump as she cleared 5-11.25 to win the event by more than five inches and move within .04 meters of the NCAA automatic mark. Abby Kimball finished in a tie for second in the pole vault with a jump of 11-01.75. Erika Foushee and Ashley Hill finished sixth and seventh in the long jump as Foushee cleared 18-00.50 and Hill landed 17-08.00 from the line. Foushee also finished sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 37-03.75.

Carolina was well represented in the shot put as Mary Angell claimed the top spot (49-01.50), just ahead of teammate Kimberly Warren who took home second (47-06.50). Norjai Palma finished sixth with a throw of 43-06.50. Palma also took part in the weight throw and finished third with a toss of 49-05.50.

On the men's side, Brian Barrett finished 22nd in the 400 with a time of 51.64. Adam Cunningham claimed another top 10 finish for the Heels as he finished the mile in 4:20.19 which placed him fourth on the day. Brock Baker finished 16th with a time of 4:27.49. James Reichlin and Ian Williamson both competed in the 800 with Reichlin finishing 13th and Williamson finishing 28th.

Zack Dawson and Stephen Bloemeke finished back-to-back in the 3,000 with Dawson besting his teammate. Dawson placed second with a time of 8:34.74 ahead of Bloemeke's third place finish of 8:40.14.

In the field events, Donte Nall took the top spot in the high jump as he cleared 6-11.75 more than five inches higher than the next closest collegiate. Walter Henning and Ian Reynolds finished 1-2 in the shot put invitational as Henning tossed the shot 54-09.50, ahead of Reynolds' mark of 51-02.75. Kyle Goodman made it a clean sweep for Carolina as he finished first in the open shot put with a throw of 49-05.75.

The Tar Heels will be in action again next weekend when a group travels to Blacksburg, Va. for a meet at Virginia Tech. Another group will make the trek to Boston for the USATF Indoor Championships and another group will stay in Chapel Hill for the Dick Taylor UNC Relays.
