Four Tar Heels Reach Provisional Standard

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In North Carolina's final tuneup before the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships the Tar Heels picked up four more provisional marks on Saturday at the Dick Taylor UNC Relays. The high jumping duo of Patience Coleman and Donte Nall both recorded another provisional mark. The Eddie Smith Field House will serve as host of the 2008 ACC Indoor Championships next week from Thursday, Feb. 28 - Saturday March 1.

On the men's side, Kelvin Hardesty finished second in the 60-meter dash as he ran a 7.00 in the prelims and finished the final in 7.02 for the second-place showing. Carolina earned two more top five finishes in the 200 as Charles Cox took the top spot in a time of 22.03, just ahead of teammate Ian Williamson who finished third with a time of 22.65.

Ryan Booker, Adam Smith and Brian Barrett all posted top five finishes in the 400 with Booker leading the way and finishing first in a time of 50.91. Smith took home third (51.18) and Barret finished in fifth (51.98). James Reichlin and Adam Cunningham finished 1-2 in the 800 as Reichlin posted a time of 1:56.61 and Cunningham crossed the line in 1:57.11. In the 3000, Stephen Bloemeke finished in fifth with a time of 8:43.38.

 

 

Mateo Sossah posted a second place finish in the 60-meter hurdles as he tackled the course in 8.37, .05 faster than he ran in the prelims. The 4x400 relay team posted a second place finish with a time of 3:28.47.

In the field events, Donte Nall cleared seven feet once again as he crossed the bar at 7-00.25 for another provisional mark. Edward Baldwin III set a new personal-best in the long jump as he recorded a jump of 23-07.50 to win the invitational group. Austin Davis finished second in the long jump invitational flight with a leap of 23-02.00, while Sossah posted a victory in the open long jump (22-05.25) in preparation for the heptathlon next week. Davis took the top spot in the triple jump as he landed 50-00.50 for the win.

Ian Reynolds and Kyle Goodman posted another pair of top three finishes with Reynolds tossing the shot 55-04.75 for second and Goodman posting a mark of 47-11.00 for third.

On the women's side, Shardae Anderson and Tyra Johnson posted identical times in the 60 meter dash as the duo finished in a tie for third. Christine Johnson inched closer to a provisional standard in the 200 as she finished in first with a time of 24.97, just ahead of teammate Ashley Hill who finished third in a itme of 25.22. Dominique Jackson added another victory to Carolina's total as she claimed the 400 in a time of 57.64, nearly a second ahead of the next finisher. Not far behind was Taylor Parkes who took fourth with a race of 1:00.34. Kristy Longman helped the Tar Heels sweep the middle distances as she took the top spot in the 800 crossing the line in 2:16.04.

Vanneisha Ivy and LaToya James finished back-to-back in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles. The duo posted provisional standards in the prelims with Ivy finished in a time of 8.37 and James not far behind in 8.40. Ivy would claim the final title with Alexandra Coppadge taking home fourth and Gabby Gioia finishing fifth.

Patience Coleman posted another provisional mark in the high jump as she cleared 5-10 to win the event. Ashley Haislip was also competing in the high jump and posted a mark of 5-08 for second place and just two inches shy of the NCAA provisional standard. Abby Kimball added another victory in the pole vault as she was the lone vaulter to clear 11-07.75.

LaToya James, Erika Foushee and Ashley Hill claimed the top three spots in the long jump as the trio cleared 18 feet. James led the way at 18-09.75, Foushee cleared 18-05.75 and Hill finished at 18-03.00. Foushee finished second in the triple jump as she cleared 37-05.25.

Norjai Palma and Jocelyn White finished first and second in the shot put as Palma tallied a mark of 46-01.25 and White was not far behind at 44-02.00. Palma finished fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 48-10.75.

The Tar Heels will attempt to defend their home turf next week as they host the ACC Indoor Championships set to begin at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Eddie Smith Field House.
