Nall PRs On Day One Of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - Sophomore high jumper Donte Nall cleared 7-02.50 to set a new personal best, win the event and claim a regional mark at the opening day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday. Six other Tar Heels joined Nall with regional marks on the day, including senior Jocelyn White who won the discus throw. The Raleigh Relays will come to a close on Saturday.

Tyra Johnson joined Nall with a PR as she qualified for the 100-meter dash final finishing seventh overall in a time of 11.67. Also qualifying was Ashley Hill who took 14th with a time of 12.04. There were three Tar Heels in the top 15 of the 400-meter dash with Christine Johnson leading the way. Johnson took fifth place in the race as she crossed the line in 55.53 ahead of teammate Callie Pottinger who finished ninth in 55.96. Shardae Anderson finished 15th overall with a time of 56.60.

A week after making a regional mark in the 100-meter hurdles, freshman LaToya James doubled up as she finished second, but was the top collegiate in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.86. Porscha Dobson and Vanneisha Ivy also finished in the top 10 with Dobson (8th, 1:02.24) edging out Ivy (9th, 1:02.41).

 

 

Patience Coleman made it a Carolina sweep in the high jump when she cleared 5-10.75 for her first regional qualifying mark of the outdoor season. Kim Warren finished third overall and second among collegiates in the shot put when she recorded a mark of 47-00.25 for another Tar Heel regional mark. Mary Angell was not far behind Warren as she tossed the shot 45-05.00 for sixth overall, while Norjai Palma finished 13th with a throw of 43-00.25. Jocelyn White took the discus throw as she posted a regional mark with a first place throw of 169-05. Angell turned in another top 10 showing as she placed fourth with a toss of 151-10.

On the men's side, Charles Cox earned his second regional mark of the year in as many weeks when he finished fifth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.74. Cox's time ranks as the third-best in school history as well as third-best in the nation. Ryan Booker finished 20th in the 400 as he posted a time of 48.11, just ahead of Ian Williamson's 27th place time of 48.61. Reggie Berry finished 15th overall in the 400-meter hurdles, but was the eighth collegiate with a time of 53.73 which was 10 seconds faster than his performance a week ago. Brian Barrett also competed in the 400-hurdles and finished 27th in a time of 54.78.

Nall's record-setting jump of 7-02.50 is currently the top mark in the country and ties him for fifth in Carolina history as he picked up his first regional qualifying mark of the year. Travis Leonard also competed in the high jump and tied for 10th as he cleared 6-04.75. Parker Smith turned in a fifth place showing in the pole vault when he cleared 15-05.00. Edward Baldwin III joined Nall with a personal best on Friday when he tallied a mark of 23-11.75 in the long jump for a third place finish. Austin Davis took home 11th in the same event as he cleared 22-11.00.

Ian Reynolds and Kyle Goodman competed in the shot put with Reynolds finishing ninth (52-02.75) and Goodman finishing 19th (48-02.00). Emory Parsons equaled his mark in the discus throw from a week ago when he tossed the disc 156-00.

The Tar Heels will conclude action at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday with events running all day.
