STATESBORO, GA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in 13th place after the first round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. The Tar Heels carded a 10-over-par 298 total on Friday. Tennessee leads the 18-team field with a six-under 282 total. Freshman Henry Zaytoun, from Raleigh, N.C., led the Tar Heels after firing a one-over 73 in the first round to tie for 23rd place. Another freshman, Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., carded a 74 and is tied for 36th. Barden Berry, a senior from Kinston, N.C., posted a 75 to tie for 49th place. Senior Reed Darsie, from Chapel Hill, carded a 76 and is tied for 57th while sophomore David Holzwoth, also from Chapel Hill, struggled with an 81 to tie for 92nd place. Three players are tied for first place at four-under 68 - Mark Anderson from South Carolina, Clayton Rotz from LSU and Zach Sucher from Alabama-Birmingham. Another trio of players are deadlocked in fourth place at three-under 69 - Alabama's Michael Thompson and Stewart Whitt and Tennessee's Robin Wingardh. In the team race, Alabama fired a three-under 285 and is in second place, three shots behind Tennessee. South Carolina and Alabama-Birmingham are tied for third place at two-under 286 while LSU is in fifth place at one-under 287. The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at Forest Heights Country Club, a par 72, 6,962-yard layout. Live scoring is available throughout the tournament on Golfstat.com.
